Starlink MINI in a Caravan: Permanent Installation or Portable Setup?
Should your Starlink MINI stay mounted on the caravan, or should you be able to move it between your van, 4WD and campsite?
There is no single right answer. The better setup depends on where you park, how often you move, and whether the MINI needs to work away from the caravan. There is also a useful middle ground: keep the dish portable, but install a permanent power connection on the van.
Option 1: Permanently mount the Starlink MINI
A permanent mount suits travellers who expect to use their MINI mainly with one caravan. Once the mount, cable route and power supply are properly installed, there is less to set up at each stop.
The trade-off is positioning. If you park under trees or beside a building, you cannot move a roof-mounted dish to a clearer spot without moving the caravan. Before committing to a mounting position, use the obstruction tool in the Starlink app to check its view of the sky. Trees, poles and roofs can interrupt the connection.
A permanent installation also needs a suitable mount, protected cabling and correctly completed electrical and weatherproofing work. If the job involves the vehicle’s electrical system or a roof penetration, have a suitably qualified installer assess it.
Consider permanent mounting if: the MINI will stay with the caravan, you favour a ready-to-use setup, and the proposed position has been checked for obstructions.
Option 2: Keep the dish portable, but fit a power socket to the caravan
Portable does not have to mean running a cable through a window every time you stop. RV WIFI’s Starlink MINI 12V to 30V Caravan Power Socket is a fitted external connection for a caravan’s 12V system. It is designed to work with the original Starlink MINI cable, so you can connect the dish when you need it and pack it away when you leave.
This arrangement keeps your choice of dish position open. At one campsite, the caravan may have a clear view of the sky. At another, you may need to place the MINI elsewhere within reach of the cable. The socket remains on the van; the dish does not have to.
Consider a fitted socket if: you want a tidy caravan power connection but still want to move and store the MINI.
Already have a caravan described as 'pre-wired'? Check exactly what was fitted before buying components. RV WIFI’s 'Starlink MINI Pre Wired Bundle' is designed for caravans that already have an RV WIFI Weatherproof Port. “Starlink-ready” on a build sheet does not, by itself, confirm that the required port is there.
Option 3: Keep both the dish and its power setup portable
If your MINI goes from the caravan to a 4WD, a fitted caravan socket may only solve part of the problem. You may want a power option that can travel with the dish.
That is the role of the upcoming 'RV WIFI MINI Boost'. It is a portable 12V to 30V power booster for Starlink MINI, aimed at 4WD owners. It is planned with a choice of: Anderson plug or cigarette-lighter plug connections. An optional remote-control feature is also planned, so you can turn the booster on and off with ease.
The important question is not just which plug you prefer. It is whether the chosen connection and your vehicle’s power supply suit the finished MINI Boost specifications. Check those details before purchase or use. An Anderson plug or cigarette-lighter socket alone does not confirm that a particular setup is suitable.
Consider MINI Boost if, you regularly take the MINI away from the caravan and want a portable 12V power option for your 4WD.
Which setup should you choose?
- The MINI stays with one caravan: Look at a permanent mount, provided the mounting position and installation are suitable.
- The MINI stays mostly with the caravan, but needs to move around camp: Keep the dish portable and consider a fitted caravan power socket.
- The MINI travels between the caravan and a 4WD: A portable power option such as the upcoming MINI Boost may better match the way you use it.
- The caravan is already pre-wired: Identify the exact external port before choosing a bundle or installation kit.
You can also combine approaches. A fitted caravan connection can be convenient when travelling in the van, while a separate portable power setup may suit trips in the 4WD. The choice is about where you use the MINI, not a rule that every traveller needs the same installation.
Do you need a separate router?
Not necessarily. Starlink MINI has integrated Wi-Fi, so you do not need to buy a separate caravan router just to get online. A separate router becomes a question of what you want your 'in-van network' to do, particularly if you also use mobile data or have an existing RV WIFI setup. Decide that separately from how you mount and power the dish.
Before you buy or install anything
Ask yourself:
1. Will the MINI be used only with the caravan, or also with a 4WD?
2. Can your proposed dish position get a clear view of the sky?
3. Do you want to pack the dish away after each stop?
4. What power connection is already fitted to your caravan or vehicle?
5. If your caravan is “pre-wired”, which exact port has been installed?
Still deciding? Tell RV WIFI where you plan to use your Starlink MINI, whether your caravan has an RV WIFI Weatherproof Port, and what power connections are available in your 4WD. Those details will help narrow down which setup to check next.
