What size SIM card should I use?
Use a full-sized SIM card with your RV Wi-Fi router.
If you only have a micro or nano SIM, insert it into the full-size plastic frame that comes with your starter kit - it should sit completely flat before inserting.
What happens if I insert the wrong SIM card size?
If the SIM disappears completely inside the slot, it’s too small.
Gently use a straightened paper clip to edge it back out.
Then place that SIM into the full-size adapter, making sure it clicks into place and lies flat.
When inserted correctly, about 3 mm of the card remains visible at the slot edge.
Do I need a SIM card to use RV Wi-Fi?
Not always.
If you’re only using the media centre to stream from a USB or external hard drive, or printing via Wi-Fi, you don’t need a SIM.
However, for internet access, a SIM is required.
Always power-cycle your router after inserting or removing a SIM so it can re-read the card correctly.
Can I use the SIM from my phone?
Yes - you can temporarily use your phone’s SIM card as long as it’s in a full-size adapter.
This is great for testing or short trips, but for long-term travel, a dedicated data SIM is recommended.
Do I need a mobile plan or contract?
No.
RV Wi-Fi routers work with pre-paid or month-to-month data plans.
How do I change my Wi-Fi password?
Your default Wi-Fi password is rvwifi1234.
To update it:
- Connect to your RV Wi-Fi network.
- Open your browser and go to http://10.0.1.1.
- Log in to the router interface and follow the on-screen steps to update your Wi-Fi name or password.
How much signal gain can I expect from the external antenna?
The external antenna delivers a maximum gain of 5.4 dB, with an average of 3.2 dB on Band 28.
It includes three antennas - 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi - optimised for Australia’s mobile networks.
What does “omni-directional” mean?
Omni-directional means the antenna picks up and transmits signal in a 360-degree horizontal pattern, giving you consistent coverage without needing to manually point it.
How long are the antenna cables?
Each external antenna lead is 2 metres long and can be extended or shortened by an auto-electrician if required.
Internal Wi-Fi antennas measure approximately 195 mm.
Can I use a different external antenna?
Yes.
The router uses a SMA-female connector for 3G/4G antennas.
If your antenna has a different connector type, you’ll just need the correct adapter.
What kind of coverage should I expect?
Coverage depends on your SIM provider’s mobile network, not the router itself.
RV Wi-Fi works with Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, ALDI Mobile, Boost, and others - wherever their mobile data networks reach.
Will RV Wi-Fi work everywhere?
You’ll get coverage in most locations that your mobile provider serves.
In very remote regions, pairing your router with Starlink via DishyDock gives you true off-grid connectivity.
Do I need to set up the antenna each time I park?
No setup needed!
The RV Wi-Fi external antenna is “set and forget” - once installed, it automatically connects when powered.
How does RV Wi-Fi compare to satellite internet?
Satellite systems like Starlink offer great reach but higher costs.
RV Wi-Fi provides affordable mobile internet using 4G and 5G networks - typically $30–$50 per month instead of per-minute satellite data fees.
Combine both for the best of both worlds.
Where should I place my router and antenna?
Install the external antenna high and clear of obstructions, such as air-conditioners or solar panels.
Keep the router away from inverters or high-power electronics to avoid interference.
How many devices can I connect?
Up to 230 devices can connect simultaneously, though most travellers find 10–20 active devices ideal for smooth performance.
Can I connect an external hard drive?
Yes - RV Wi-Fi supports external drives up to 1 TB.
Perfect for sharing movies or media through the built-in media centre.
How is RV Wi-Fi different from phone hot-spotting?
RV Wi-Fi was built for travellers:
- Stronger signal via roof-mounted antenna
- Permanent 12 V connection - no recharging or cables everywhere
- Long-range coverage (up to 50 m from your van)
- Purpose-built software for RV travellers
- No bill shock - separate from your phone data plan
Does RV Wi-Fi support Netflix or YouTube streaming?
Yes!
You can comfortably stream HD movies and videos while travelling.
(Each HD movie uses around 500 MB–1 GB of data, so choose your plan accordingly.)
How much power does RV Wi-Fi use?
Only 250 mA (milliamps) - extremely efficient for 12 V systems, ideal for solar and off-grid setups.
Can RV Wi-Fi replace mobile signal in no-coverage areas?
No - it still needs access to mobile network coverage to operate.
However, using the RV Wi-Fi High-Gain Antenna or integrating with Starlink via DishyDock significantly improves connectivity in fringe zones.
Can I use RV Wi-Fi at home?
Yes!
With the optional 240 V power adapter, your RV Wi-Fi router can double as a home Wi-Fi solution when you’re not on the road.
❓Can I remotely log in to check my signal?
RV Wi-Fi operates as a standalone consumer device, so remote access isn’t available — this helps keep your network private and secure.
❓Does the Brutus fit my DO45 hitch?
Yes.
The Brutus coupling lock fits both DO35 and DO45 hitches.
It includes a reducer sleeve that adjusts the 1¼-inch hole to ⅞-inch, ensuring a perfect fit.
